To effectively identify the needs of children with a social worker and ensure they can access interventions that make a difference to their education.
The post holder will have responsibility for narrowing the attainment gap for children with a social worker. Their work will include assisting a network of schools and social workers to access advice and guidance on the needs of these vulnerable learners.
To participate in the implementation and development of the relevant government / Department for Education guidance regarding the education of children with a social worker.
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Use data and analysis to understand and monitor the cohort’s needs including making links to local strategic priorities e.g., attendance, suspension and permanent exclusion rates, overlaps with other kinds of disadvantage such as Free School Meal (FSM) eligibility and Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) rates.
- Audit training needs of schools and social care to ensure the professional network are equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to ensure education is prioritised and be able to deliver or signpost relevant training and support to the professional network.
- Work alongside schools and social care to ensure that education outcomes are a key focus in child in need and child protection planning and contribute to effective multi-agency working.
- Promote professional practice for education settings and local authorities which champions high levels of support alongside high standards for children with a social worker.
- Track and monitor attendance and exclusions for children with a social worker and offer strategies and support to facilitate re-engagement into education.
- Provide support, guidance and challenge to school leaders to strengthen provision already in place, with a specific focus on children with a social worker. This may include advice on how to promote and secure good attendance, working in conjunction with their Education Welfare Service.
- Provide advice, guidance and training to social work teams on promoting the education of vulnerable learners.
- Support the professional network in clearly identifying the pupil’s barriers to learning and planning interventions to help them to attain their educational potential including support with preventative measures to avoid suspensions and exclusions.
- Signpost schools and social workers to wider enrichment to enable children with a social worker to benefit from opportunities.
- Share knowledge and expertise to strengthen how education settings and social care understand the impact of adversity and trauma on learning and educational outcomes of children, recognising how stability and consistency in relationships can help children to overcome barriers to learning.
- Contribute to the Virtual School’s training programme for social workers , schools and other professionals.
- Support and advise schools social workers and carers with regards to transition between school phases and key stages i.e. early years to primary, primary to secondary school, etc. ensuring effective transition plans are in place as required.
Education, Training & Qualifications
Degree + PGCE or equivalent /
Qualified Teacher Status + three years mainstream teaching experience
Knowledge & Experience
(1) Demonstrates knowledge of the
National Curriculum / SEN legislation/ DfE guidance on Children with a Social Worker
2) Demonstrates an understanding of the complex difficulties facing Children with a Social Worker.
(3) Demonstrates an understanding of the conflicting pressures on school and LA in seeking to promote the attainment of Children with a Social Worker.
(4) Demonstrates experience of working with children with challenging behaviour.
(5) Demonstrates experience of working in a multi-cultural community.
(6) Demonstrates an understanding of a wide range of factors that impact on education achievement including attendance, attachment, trauma, and Social, Emotional Mental Health Difficulties.
(7) Demonstrates an understanding of the benefits and challenges of multi-agency working.
8) Demonstrates an understanding of the age-related expectations of attainment for Early Years, Primary, Secondary and Post-16.
Skills & Abilities
(9) Ability to advise on interventions for Children with a Social Worker who may need specialised interventions to achieve their potential.
(10) Perseveres in challenging circumstances and tasks which involve Children with a Social Worker in order to achieve positive outcomes.
(11) Demonstrates ability to plan, organise and take responsibility for work and evaluate as appropriate.
(12) Demonstrates a clear understanding of the importance of working in a team.
