Overall Purpose of Job
To organise and run a crèche, which is a facility made available to adults who are involved with courses, activities and other related community events.
Job Summary
The Crèche Assistant is responsible for ensuring that children are safely and appropriately looked after during the periods in which their mothers/carers are using Our Newham – Learning & Skills Facilities and for providing them with a stimulating and varied programme of play.
Key Tasks and Accountabilities:
Key tasks and accountabilities are intended to be a guide to the range and level of work expected of the post holder. This is not an exhaustive list of all tasks that may fall to the post holder and employees will be expected to carry out such other reasonable duties which may be required from time to time.
To undertake all responsibilities listed below:
- To be a member of the Crèche management team.
- To deputise for the Crèche Leader in their absence
- To have an awareness of policies relating to the crèche and the Children’s Act registration.
- To establish good relationships with children and their parents or carers and to develop an understanding of their various cultural backgrounds.
- To provide a programme of activities and topics in the crèche which will stimulate all areas of children’s development and meet the needs of children from a range of ages and cultural backgrounds.
- To supervise children placed in the crèche and ensure that all activities are carried out in a safe manner, with an emphasis on accident prevention.
- To administer basic first aid and comfort and contact emergency services where and when necessary.
- To undertake general cleaning, tidying and display duties.
- To be responsible for the care, safe keeping and monitoring of equipment, materials and the crèche area, complying with the council’s policy on health and safety.
- To assist in the supervision of part-time assistants, voluntary staff and placements.
- To assist and support any community developments relating to the crèche.
- To liaise with the crèche leader regarding equipment and material needs, maintenance etc.
EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum qualification of NNEB, or BTEC or NVQ III in Childcare and Education.
KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of basic first aid
Knowledge of health and safety and hygiene issues relating to crèche provision
Awareness of equal opportunities and its implications
Awareness of legal responsibilities relating to child care
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
EXPERIENCE:
Ability to communicate with children and show a basic understanding of their needs
Ability to deal with and prevent accidents and incidents which may occur in the crèche area
Ability to organise a variety of children’s activities and games using a range of equipment
Ability to communicate with other staff and users of crèche facilities
Ability to maintain simple records and to assist in day to day administrative tasks
Ability to supervise, support and establish good relationships with children
Ability to work as part of a team
