About the role
Social workers in the Leaving Care service support young people who are looked after (LAC) and
Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children (UASC) from around age 16, working with the Permanence Team to transfer cases at the most appropriate point for the young person. Social workers lead on the identification of needs and pathway planning, and provide direct support to young people to achieve their aims.
Social workers will ensure the educational, training and employment needs of young people are assessed and met and will Identify needs and assist young people to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to live independently, including to manage their money. This includes identifying and securing accommodation needs, assisting with the resettlement process and ensuring good quality legal representation for those seeking asylum, or who have an unresolved immigration status.

Social workers will carry some cases beyond the young person’s 18th birthday but may increasingly hand over support for older young people to Personal Advisors, as appropriate for each case.

Educated to a degree level with a relevant professional qualification in social work

Key Skills:

  1. Excellent oral and written communication skills, to be able to articulate to customers often technical information in a way which is meaningful.
  2. Influencing skills to be able to persuade colleagues to draft responses to letters and provide information on progress.
  3. Able to prioritise between competing demands and remain calm when dealing with irate or unhappy customers.
  4. Proficient IT skills in several specialist systems, plus the full range of Microsoft.

Qualifications and/or experience:
⦁ Educated to GCSE standard or equivalent qualifications or comparable experience.
⦁ Experience of working in a customer service role, providing information, resolving queries and prioritising calls.
⦁ Experience of use of relevant software, including social media and systems, to support service delivery.
⦁ Knowledge of the processes involved in the work of prevention and COVID19, to be able to explain to customers what stage a piece of work is at, how it will progress, etc.
